fe-safe/Rotate™

Rotational symmetry module for fe-safe™

fe-safe/Rotate™ is an enhanced module for fe-safe™, the state-of-the-art durability analysis software suite for FE models from Safe Technology.

fe-safe/Rotate™ speeds up the fatigue analysis of rotating components by taking advantage of their axial symmetry.

Advantages

  • Fatigue analysis time is reduced - fe-safe/Rotate™ automatically produces a sequence of additional stress results as if the model had been rotated through a sequence of different orientations
  • FEA analysis time is reduced - a single static FE analysis can be used to define the fatigue loading for a full revolution
  • FEA results files are smaller because fewer solutions are required
  • Additional FE solutions can be introduced where the desired rotation increment is smaller than the angle of symmetry
  • fe-safe/Rotate™ works with full or half models

Types of Component

fe-safe/Rotate™ is used with models that have axial symmetry. For example:

fe-safe/Rotate™ also supports models where only part of the model has axial symmetry. For example:

fe-safe/Rotate™ supports full-models and half-models, with either an even or odd number of axisymmetric segments.

Application

From a single static FE load step, fe-safe/Rotate™ produces additional stress results, as if the model had been rotated through a sequence of different orientations. The stress results are used to provide a definition of the loading of the component, through one full revolution fe-safe/Rotate™ speeds up the fatigue analysis of rotating components by taking advantage of their axial symmetry.

Because fe-safe/Rotate™ can define the fatigue loading for a full revolution from a single static FE analysis, the FE analysis time is reduced by a factor equal to the number of symmetrical segments in the model. The FE analysis involves fewer load steps, so the FE results file is smaller.

Additional FE solutions can be introduced where the desired rotation increment (i.e. the angle between each fatigue analysis step) is smaller than the angle of symmetry. Each additional solution takes advantage of the axial symmetry of the component, requiring only a single static FE analysis to define the loading for a full revolution.

flange

fe-safe/Rotate™ automatically generates a fatigue load definition. This consists of a sequence of load steps generated from the FE analysis results.

Once fe-safe/Rotate™ has been used to import the FE model into fe-safe™, fatigue analysis is performed in the usual way. Because fatigue results are produced for one axisymmetric segment only, the fatigue analysis time is reduced by a factor equal to the number of segments in the model. By virtue of their symmetry, the results produced for one segment apply equally to all segments. Some FE viewers can expand the data from one segment so that it can be viewed for the whole model.

fe-safe/Rotate™ is supplied as an optional add-on module for fe-safe™. It currently supports:

  • ANSYS RST results files (*.rst)
  • ABAQUS FIL (*.fil) files (ASCII or binary) containing element-nodal data
